About the Sgt. Joan J. Duran Scholarship

The mission of the Joan Duran Remembrance Committee is to honor the memory of our friend and classmate Joan J. “Superman” Duran.  The committee believes that the best way to honor Joan’s memory is in the creation of a Sgt. Joan J. Duran Boston Latin School Prize Night Scholarship, to be awarded in perpetuity.

While the recipient criteria for the scholarship has not been finalized, the committee seeks to honor Joan’s character, interests and dreams.  The criteria for a recipient of the scholarship will be a combination of the following:

• Excellence in mathematics
• Low income background
• Excellence in track or football (or a combination of varsity athletics prowess)
• Devotion to community service and leadership

We believe that these tennets speak to the person that Joan was, and serve as a testament to our collective memory of him.  The committee will defer to the family’s wishes in the final selection of recipient criteria, and be sure that all criteria are consistent with the traditions and requirements of Boston Latin School Prize Night Scholarships.
